These miniature nativities are handmade from the tiny shells of nuts; Macadamia and Pistachio. Get out your magnifying glass; it is incredible to contemplate how the artisans can produce an entire nativity scene inside a shell that is so small. The Mary, Joseph and Baby are made from a bread dough mixture. These Nativities are a natural product made by artisans from Ecuador. Look for those who care about the environment. Help us, Help them.

Camari Artisan Story

Ecuador

CA-Artisan-8-263x240

Camari is a Quechua word meaning "gift"; and true to its name, it is also a fair trade organization that has been a gift for many people of Ecuador.  Camari, a member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), was founded in 1981 to address the problems inherent in the marketing of small-scale agriculture and the production of handicrafts in the rural and marginalized communities of Ecuador.

Camari helps artisans find access to financial credit, training, and technical assistance; yet from the beginning they have understood that this alone was not a sufficient recipe for success. Without direct access to international and fair trade markets, artisans and farmers are forced to sell to intermediaries at prices that cannot provide the basic necessities of life.

Since their inception, Camari has grown to establish numerous shops in major cities throughout Ecuador, providing access to international markets, and alternative employment to more than 6,500 artisan and farmer families in 18 of Ecuador's 22 provinces.

About the Artisans

Esther Kariuki is an independent artisan who continues to make a big impact in villages outside of Nairobi, Kenya, near Kitui.

Esther and her husband train women on banana fiber crafting to empower them to earn money while working from their homes. Banana Fiber which would normally be discarded is used to craft unique pieces taking the leaves from the banana tree to create durable and eco-friendly pieces of art. The products range from whimsical home decor, Christmas nativities, decorative and holiday ornaments, to functional trays/baskets.

The banana fiber is first dried, and then a light varnish applied. Once this process is complete craftspeople cut the fiber into thin strips to make several different items, including boxes, Bao Bab trees and mobiles. The varnish on the banana fiber with its many tones of brown resembles textured tortoise shell. Esther ensures the craftspeople are paid a fair wage for their goods, which has enabled many in her small village to earn a sustainable wage for their household.
